You might not be aware of the extent to which you can get involved with the London 2012 Olympic Games in a creative sense, but the opportunities available are abundant, as is room for invention for the self-initiated.

As the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is the largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements, it only makes sense that art students get involved.

The National Union of Students’ (NUS) Be A Champion scheme promotes the many cultural activities that students can engage with and could be useful for anyone after a platform for their work or who wishes to instigate an Olympics-themed project. Its Project Manager, Fiona Ellison, says:

“Be a Champion provides you with details about all the different opportunities to be involved in London 2012. We want to make sure that you find some way to celebrate the Games coming to London and get involved in whatever way suits you. Whether it’s through volunteering in your local community, organising an Olympic quiz for your housemates or creating a photo journal of your journey to London 2012, there are loads of opportunities for you to take forward.”

Film Nation: Shorts invites 16-25 year old filmmakers to submit their films to be shown at major sporting venues over the course of the Games, whereas Stories of the World invites aspiring curators to work with local museums on exhibitions to tie in with London 2012.

NUS also suggest dancers dream up their own Olympic celebration through dance, to be promoted by NUS and offers details on how to get involved with next year’s Big Dance – or plan your own event to coincide with its festivities.

There is also a very exciting opportunity for broadcasting students: the Olympic Broadcasting Services is advertising a Broadcast Training Programme for students enrolled in a relevant course. Those most successful may go on to work as broadcast professionals at the Games themselves!

There is no shortage of inspiration – see The Be A Champion website for more details.
