EAUC Poll
The results from the poll ‘For my institution to comply with the
Display Energy Certificates we need’ are below:
34% of respondents thought that training was needed
25% of respondents didn’t know what was needed
23% thought that they would need external help to comply
18% thought a guide would be needed to comply
Following on from this the EAUC will be running one or two DEC

Campus Sustainability Conference
This year’s Scottish Conference is taking place at Queen Margaret
University on Tuesday 6th May. Keynote speakers include Rosalyn
Marshall, Vice Principal of Queen Margaret University and Dr Bill
Harvey, Deputy Director of Learning & Teaching, Scottish Funding
Council.

University of Bristol ‘Energy Centres’
The University of Bristol is planning to cut its carbon footprint by building two
year-round “energy centres”. The University of Bristol said the tri-generation
centres would “dramatically” increase its energy efficiency. They will create
electricity, recover heat and produce chilled water.

£5m for research into low carbon science
The Higher Education Funding Council For Wales has provided £5.1m in funding to
establish a Low Carbon Research Institute for Wales. The project is led by the
Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University in partnership with Bangor School
of Chemistry, Cardiff School of Engineering, Glamorgan Sustainable Environment
Research Centre and Swansea School of Engineering. The institute will build on
energy research capacity and facilities around the existing areas of low carbon and
energy expertise in Wales whilst looking to expand research activities into other
energy-related areas.
11 new posts at Loughborough’s CREST
Loughborough University is to further strengthen its position as a world-class
research centre for energy and climate change with the appointment of eleven new
academic staff, including Chairs in Renewable Energy, Building Performance
Modelling, Hydroclimatic Modelling, and Photovoltaics for Power Systems.

Recycle Week
Up and down the country from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th June 2008, local

Invitations for applications to £4m bio-energy grant fund
A £4 million fund to support the installation of biomass-fuelled heating and
combined heat & power projects, including anaerobic digesters has been
announced. Applicants from the community sector can include schools, colleges
and universities.

Education Supplement on 22 May.

Eighteen more universities join Higher Education Carbon Management
scheme
Eighteen more universities from across England and Scotland are set to
collectively cut their carbon footprints by 72,000 tonnes and energy costs by £8.1
million by joining phase four of the Carbon Trust’s Higher Education Carbon
Management (HECM) programme, launched on 23 April. This brings the number of
universities working with the Carbon Trust to 68, out of the UK total of 106. The
new recruits are Anglia Ruskin University, University of Derby, Lancaster
University, London South Bank University, Sheffield Hallam University, The
University of Hull, University of Liverpool, University of Northampton, University of
Winchester, Birmingham City University, University of Bristol, Cranfield University,
University of Glasgow, Glasgow Caledonian, University of Abertay, University of
Heriot-Watt, University of Stirling and Napier University. The EAUC sits on the
HECM Steering Group.

66 bodies launch call to ‘Take Action on Active Travel’
The UK’s leading public health, transport and planning bodies are
calling on electoral candidates across the country to invest 10% of
transport budgets in cycling and walking initiatives if elected, to help
fight the UK’s obesity crisis. The EAUC are an early signatory to this
