London College of Communication’s Outreach programme, ‘Insights’ offers students from our partner schools and colleges a range of opportunities to engage with the University and insight into Higher Education.

For young people who have had no prior experience or family who have not been through higher education, starting university can seem like a daunting journey. UAL Insights programmes, run by the Outreach team, offers students over the age of 16 the opportunity to find out what it’s like to study creative subjects at UAL’s various colleges.

Like other Colleges, LCC’s UAL Insights post-16 programme helps young creatives get familiar with university life and what to expect if they decide to pursue higher education. Level 3 Diploma or A/AS Level students can take part in the core Spring, Summer and Autumn/Winter programme alongside their final 2 years of study at school or college.

Students received support from tutors in previous Spring Schools

Spring Schools encourage students to explore a range of disciplines before specialising in a particular subject area in our Summer Schools. Taking part gives students the chance to develop their knowledge and skills. During our Autumn/Winter Schools activities switch to building portfolios and preparing for interviews. This helps to support students’ progression to Foundation or Undergraduate courses.

Insights is taught by UAL teaching staff and supported by specially trained current UAL students (Outreach Ambassadors). Taking part is free for participants and around 380 Schools, Colleges and cultural organisations in the Greater London Area are involved.

Sarah Ellison, the LCC Development Manager said: “Students from widening participation backgrounds may not have the connections that they need to help them progress in the creative sector and can access specialist support through our careers and employability service. This can include advice on job applications, IP, mentoring, paid internships or short-term bursaries to subsidise studio rent and materials.”

Participating in the Insights programme, LCC has previously helped young creatives get familiar with university life and learn what to expect if they decide to pursue higher education. The opportunity gives them ‘Insights’ into a particular subject area and the chance to improve their skills and confidence. Some participating students from the Insights programme have gone on to receive Hegarty Foundation Bursaries.
