This month London College of Communication are hosting the first ever Sound Art residency for Iranian artists and musicians in the UK, in collaboration with international arts consultancy Six Pillars.

Five emerging practitioners will spend the two weeks from 9-20 December at LCC taking part in an intensive programme of collaborative sessions and technical workshops.

The artists will collaborate with Sound Arts postgraduate students and will also work with legendary improvising guitarist Keith Rowe (founding member of AMM, The Scratch Orchestra) and the godfather of electro-acoustic improvisation and radical composer and pianist Veryan Weston (London Improvisers Orchestra, Derek Jarman’s Caravaggio).

The first week of the residency will culminate in the performance of “Iran-UK Sonics” at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, Friday 13 December at 6pm, and will broadcast on arts-music radio station Resonance 104.4FM.

Iranian artists include:

Nasim Khorassani
Sepehr Haghighi
Nemo Ghasemi
Niloufar Em
Heckmat(t)

LCC students involved in the performance include:

Irina Sacharow
Yiorgis Sakellariou
Howie Lee
Artur Vidal
Maria Popadomanolaki
Angie Yeowell

Fari Bradley who is running this visionary project with Southbank, LCC and Resonance 104.4FM says: “After a public call out and in-depth selection process, we’ve a hugely varied group coming to exchange ideas with the UK. Our aim is to start a dialogue between Iran and the UK about experimental music, and to make a difference in terms of frequently problematic cultural perceptions.

We can boost the music scene in Iran by avoiding ‘fusion’ music, seeking instead peer to peer exchange at the forefront of this exciting musical genre, involving the most potent members of the UK scene. ‘Iran-UK Sonics’ is the culmination of years of cultural research for Six Pillars’ weekly broadcasts on radio station Resonance 104.4FM.”
