COLOURFUL bands of fabric weave their way round the branches of a tree on Wick Village Green – and it’s all down to two former London College of Communication students.
Beccy McCray and Hannah Elbourne founded Crafternoon Tea Club in 2007. Its aim is to bring people together through creative activity, sharing materials and ideas, using collective powers for the greater good, and communicating social ideals and environmental sustainability.
“The fabrics used were all sourced from the East London area – a mixture of recycled and unwanted materials. Hundreds of people came along to help us make bands and each and every one made it into the final artwork, so we feel that we achieved what we set out to do,” Beccy said.
They were commissioned by the London Legacy Development Corporation to complete the technicolour tree.

Good old Becky and Hannah – still doing good stuff all these years later. Another LCC alumni, Professor Ian McLaren, was involved in the design of the Munich 1972 Olympics. They’ve been celebrating the 40th anniversary recently.
