Dr Cathy Lane and Dr Angus Carlyle receive the Sir Misha Black Award at the RCA

The Sir Misha Black Award for ‘Innovation in Design Education 2011′ has been awarded to the Creative Research into Sound Art Practice (CRiSAP), a University of the Arts London (UAL) research centre based at the London College of Communication (LCC).

The award was presented to directors of CRiSAP, Dr Cathy Lane and Dr Angus Carlyle (pictured above), at a special ceremony held on Tuesday 8 March 2011, at the Royal College of Art.

The annual Award is presented to design educators in the UK who have contributed to the development of design education through innovative teaching, course design or the relationship between education and professional practice. It also recognises innovation and achievement in the developing culture of design education.

CRiSAP, aims to extend the development of the emerging disciplinary field of sound arts and to encourage the broadening and deepening of the discursive context in which sound arts is practised.

The value of its work has been recognised through the funding it has received from the British Academy, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Its staff members have produced edited books and monographs, CD compilations, curated and contributed to gallery and online exhibitions and have organised conferences and symposia. These activities have all helped towards the increasing recognition of the emerging discipline of sound arts and design within a recognisable and accessible scholarly framework.

While its research students have worked on collaborative projects with University of Kent radio students, Royal College of Art animation students, Circus Space and the London Sinfonietta.

The centre has endeavoured to extend its innovation outside the UK, and has co-produced symposia in Zurich (2009) and Aix-en-Provence (2010) as well as an evening of performances at the Gallus Theatre in Frankfurt. It has also developed a rewarding relationship with the Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology in Bangalore that has led to artists’ residencies, workshops, student and staff exchanges.
