Chelsea Special Collections closure

Special Collections at Chelsea College of Art and Design Library (http://www.arts.ac.uk/library/collections/chelsea) are currently inaccessible to users and staff. Material not available for use includes artists’ books, multiples, archives and ephemera. Weekly Special Collections drop-in sessions, seminars and visits have also been suspended until further notice. This is due to an unexpected problem with the ceiling of the room where these collections are housed. Urgent repair work is scheduled, which should be completed by Monday 8^th of July, when normal service will resume. Further announcements will be made if this changes. Meanwhile, please contact the library directly for updated information.

Tie-dye donation to the London College of Fashion Archives

The London College of Fashion Archives has received a donation of the work of Anne Maile who was a textile designer specializing in the tie and dye technique. Maile studied and later taught at Camberwell College of Arts in the 1960s and 70s. She published three books on tie-dye techniques, including one on tie-dyed paper, and the collection contains all her working notes and paper samples for that book. The collection also has as many examples of Maile’s tie-dyed fabrics, designs, photographs, teaching notes, and much more.

Inspired by a boot

This water colour by Carolyn Boreham, a librarian at the London College of Fashion, is of a ladies white lace and leather boot from the 1870s with coloured embroidery and a red leather heel. ‘The Guardians of Heritage’ a film about the London College of Fashion Archives

‘The Guardians of Heritage: the Special Archives‘ is a short film documentary about the archive collections at the London College of Fashion. View the film at http://vimeo.com/62280746

The film was conceived, filmed, edited and art direction by Victoria Salsas between October and December 2012. Victoria is a student on the MA Fashion Media Production course at the London College of Fashion and this it the first in a series of films she is producing on fashion heritage.

By 1937, nearly 30 years after the opening of Selfridges, the founder, H. Gordon Selfridge had become a very prominent figure in the London retail sector. He had close ties with, what became the London College of Fashion, Barrett Street Trade School. He is shown here at a ceremony for retail workers who had successfully completed a course co-ordinated by the Retail Distributors of London, and given by experts in the various distributive fields held at Barrett Street.
