Life in the city

Writer, artist and illustrator Salvatore Rubbino gave an inspiring lecture on his work to Pre-sessional students  at London College of Communication about city life.  ‘A Walk in New York’ was explored through illustrations of walking through midtown Manhattan during 2004. This book featured a winning illustration through the V&A Illustration Awards.

Students also saw a preview of Salvatore’s new book ‘A Walk in London’ which is due for publication in April 2011 and were given ideas about places to visit and see in a new light. After the presentation many enthusiastic students spoke to Salvatore about his work and gained tips for themselves.

Just to say that I think Salvatore’s lecture was excellent. I felt that it was really relevant to PEAP aims and objectives in terms of providing students with support and understanding about their ideas for their London Project Crit. It was also beneficial as Salvatore analysed his process, and stages within it, as well as identifying his challenges and changes made based on this – all of which is relevant for Crits.

I think Rubbino’s talk was a valuable experience for all of my students. Not only did it encourage them to discuss the merits of a “real” artist’s working methods and work, but it also made them think about the features that make up effective and interesting presentations.
