LCF wins at British Fashion Council Graduate Preview Day 2013

LCF have won the WGSN Digital Portfolio Award for the fourth year running at the British Fashion Council’s Graduate Preview day.

The Graduate Preview day is an annual event which gives the fashion industry a first look at the work of newly graduated designers. It is attended each year by leading manufacturers, retailers, designers and members of the press.

Rob Phillips, Creative Director of the School of Design and Technology, said he was delighted that his students had claimed the prize for the fourth year running.

On the thinking behind the winning video he said:

“We believe that fashion film is an ephemeral, stimulating sensory experience that conveys the products in new exciting ways, reaching a much vaster audience, tapping in to today’s ‘time short’ culture.”

The WGSN Digital Presentation Award recognises the importance of the integration of fashion and technology.

Rob Phillips said, “We work excessively hard in developing digital media communications for the fashion designs of our students and film is one such dynamic example of our endeavours.”

The award winning short film was made in collaboration with OWH creative.

LCF student creates winning design for 100th Chelsea Flower Show

BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles student, Katie Bowkett, has created the winning design for a t-shirt to celebrate one hundred years of the Chelsea Flower Show.

The judges, gardener Laetitia Maklouf, and Chelsea based fashion designer, Maria Grachvogel, selected Katie’s colourful design to represent the heritage and future of the world famous flower show.

Two runners up were also selected, with 2nd place going to Edward Curtis (BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: Womenswear), and 3rd place going to Davika Anita Rattu (BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles).

The cream t-shirts displaying a floral ‘100 years’ will be on sale at 2013’s Chelsea Flower Show and online, as well as in RHS’ Wisley shop. Katie’s design will be seen and worn by the crowds at the Flower Show which are expected to number some 161,000 people. £1 from every t-shirt sold will be donated to LCF to create an award for students on the BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles course.

Katie wins membership of the RHS, tickets to the Flower Show and her designs will also be featured in the RHS Chelsea Catalogue and the RHS’ magazine, The Garden, which goes out globally.

For the first time this year LCF took back stage shots of the models from our undergraduate catwalk show. The catwalk showcased collections from menswear, womenswear, tailoring, knitwear, contour, sportswear, surface textiles and Jewellery.

Every year the British Fashion Council run a Graduates Preview day for the fashion industry to get the first look at design graduates from that academic year.

Caroline Rush, CEO of the British Fashion Council, said:

Graduate Preview Day is an exceptional showcase of work from this year’s graduating students. It’s a unique opportunity for British designers, retailers and industry experts to see the portfolio’s first hand and get a taste of the upcoming talent that will be entering the industry.

The WGSN Digital Presentation Award recognises the increasing relevance of integrating fashion and technology and was awarded to LCF for the third year running. LCF used a combination of an annual newspaper and a short film to capture the industry’s imagination. The LCF short film will exclusively be revealed on our 2012 showcase at www.fashion.arts.ac.uk/2012

LCF students dress X Factor finalists

Little Mix wearing spiked shoulder pieces by Nikita Karizma

Recent BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Development graduate Nikita Karizma created the outfits that Little Mix wore for their winning performance.

Nikita was scouted by the X Factor costume team from her profile on University of the Arts London portfolio site Showtime. Since being selected to join the team she has been creating pieces for the X Factor finals under the guidance of Laury Smith. Nikita’s highlights included creating a baby pink dress from her graduate collection for Amelia Lily, designing spiked shoulder pieces for Little Mix and producing 28 silver harnesses for dancers which were worn at the final.

Speaking about her experience, Nikita revealed:

It was an absolute pleasure working with Laury Smith and the X Factor team. We fitted Amelia’s dress onto her right before she walked onto the stage and watched her perform from her dressing room, a moment in time that a young designer will never forget. Thank you so much for the support and I look forward to sharing many more fashion memories with you all.

BA (Hons) Fashion Textiles graduate Sanna Naapuri was also featured when Misha wore an oil print velvet cape and leggings from her A/W 2011 collection.
