LCF Outreach with the support of student ambassador Emily Pascoe, MA Fashion & the Environment alumna, teamed up with Toynbee Hall young volunteer group as part of the national competition, Money for Life Challenge. The project is now one of the finalists with winners to be announced next month.

For the challenge, the volunteers elected to save money through upcycling clothing and jewellery into eastern and western cultural and fashionable styles and to educate their local community in cheap and easy ways to do this, which culminated in a fashion show at Toynbee Hall in February.

Handbag accessories in the fashion show were made during another LCF Outreach project in partnership with St Joseph’s Hospice, Hackney.

LCF has donated mannequins to a charity, WorkSpring, which is part of a new initiative to improve the lives of young people in poverty. Currently being rolled out in the Tower Hamlets area of London, WorkSpring uses donated surplus and waste from non-food organisations, such as LCF, turning them into entrepreneurial opportunities for disadvantaged 18 – 30 year olds.

Over a six month period, the young adults – who are either unemployed or out of education – are trained and mentored to re-brand, de-brand and sell on donated surplus stock. After 3 months, the WorkSpringers are required to sign off Job Seekers Allowance and use their new found skills, along with the support of the WorkSpring team, to generate an income of their own.

On the WorkSpring website David Lammy, Labour MP for Tottenham has described the initiative as an “effective programme to create unemployment in disadvantaged areas”.

LCF partnered with Newham College of Further Education in the spring term to train students studying for their Diploma in Hair and Media Make-Up. Tutors from LCF’s Foundation Degree Hair and Make-Up for Fashion delivered 3 days of workshops on site at Newham College to teach the students specific skills and techniques for a catwalk show.

Students also spent a day at LCF checking out our facilities and meeting our staff and students to hear more about studying at LCF, and finding out about the application process.

At the end of the project the students got the opportunity to test out their new skills working at NewVIc’s catwalk show at Stratford Circus. The team of students applied the hair and make up on 80 models for an afternoon and evening catwalk show! Students created all the looks using high quality cosmetics provided by Inglot.

A big thank you to Inglot for their support.

Each year, LCF runs a competition open to Year 9 art and design students from all over the country. With the 2012 Olympics causing a buzz across the UK, this year’s competition had a sportswear theme. Our Fashion in Motion competition asked students to design clothing to be worn by either a competing athlete for the 2012 Olympics or a sports fan. The students were asked to demonstrate their own fashion style through their design. We received around 50 entries from schools all over the country. Entries were judged by Claudine Rousseau, Course Leader, BA (Hons) Fashion Sportswear.

A joint first prize was given to Alex Lee for her Union Jack inspired tennis outfit and Dominica Williams, Emma Powell and Lucy Jones for their American gymnast outfit. Both students were from All Saint’s Roman Catholic School in Mansfield.

Second Prize went to Chelsea Lewis from Frances Bardesley School for Girls in Romford for her gymnast design and third prize went to Natasha Lovell from Brampton Manor School in Newham for her baseball inspired outfit.

The prize included tickets to our BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology Graduate Catwalk Show on 7 June and a one day sportswear workshop where the winning students will see Alex Lee’s design come to life.

In the month of July a group students from the Toxteth and Anfield communities in Liverpool came on a residential trip to London organised by Connexions and the Liverpool Youth Service.

Part of their trip was a visit to London College of Fashion to have a look round our John Prince’s Street site and listen to a course information presentation.

The group were also able to get talks from Merton Connexions who had previously visited the group in Liverpool. Throughout the trip the students were able to develop communications skills, learn about different cultures and improve their confidence.

LCF will be running a special day of workshops as part of Discover Young Hackney ’10, a youth arts and culture festival for young people from Hackney. On Saturday 20 February young people can have a go at two of the three workshops on offer:

Printmaking – put your own designs onto soft bags

3D construction – create sculptural designs onto a mannequin using paper and other material

Fashion illustration – a series of drawing exercises introducing you to illustration.

All workshops will take place at our Mare Street site in the east end of London, to apply you have to be aged 11 – 19 and residents of Hackney will be prioritised.

LCF are also pleased to be working with Sed*8 a new street and youth culture magazine for east London which is created by and for young people. Sed*8 will be running a 4 week course in graphic design at LCF’s Mare Street site as part of the Discover Young Hackney Festival. This is your chance to learn new skills and become a contributor for a really exciting magazine.

For more information about Sed*8 visit www.sed8magazine.com and to apply for the course contact Steph, sed8mag@googlemail.com.

These are just two of the many exciting courses happening in Hackney as part of the festival; visit the website and see what else is going on, sign up today for something new!
