FdA Hair and Make Up for Fashion students have collaborated with hair styling brand, Goldwell, in their annual exploration of the brand’s current Colour Zoom trend.

Students produced videos and shoots capturing their interpretation of this year’s theme, ‘Beautify’, a celebration of the power of style to generate positive thinking.

Made in collaboration with students from LCF’s School of Media and Communications, the productions showcased the artists’ hair and make-up creations.

Each student brought their individual style to their vision of the theme. Split into groups they created six projects: New Masters of Colour, Scarabaidae, Blonde Forever, Morphing Magdalene, Pop Tarts and Berlin 2013, all of which revelled in colour, empowerment and personality.

Goldwell Creative & Technical Director, William Wilson, told students: “What you’ve shown as creative people is that you don’t just turn up to a shoot and make it up – you’ve shown the journey to get there.”

The students’ work is featured on Goldwell’s youtube channel and will be featured as part of Creative Head Magazine’s newly launched app.

The students’ collection can be viewed on Goldwell’s website and will be preserved in the brand’s archive.

As the world tuned in to watch the irreverent and spectacular Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics Games, little did they know that LCF students played an integral part in helping to produce the 10,000 plus costumes which brought the ceremony alive.

Alongside fellow students from University of the Arts London, BA (Hons) Costume for Performance and BA (Hons) Technical Effects for Performance students were drafted in by the London 2012 Organising Committee for their exceptional making skills to perfect the costumes for both the opening and closing ceremonies for the Olympics and Paralympic games. Students have worked tirelessly for many months alongside the costume department to help bring everything together on time.

On the night students from BA (Hons) Make-Up and Prosthetics for Performance and FdA Hair and Make-up for Film and TV who specialise in original make-up for film, television, music and the theatre, helped finish off each performers look.

So, now you know, make sure you take a closer look at our students amazing work when you tune in for the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony on Sunday 12 August and for the Paralympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

Conversation was passionate and the thermostat was high at the private view for the School of Media & Communication. 226 students over 14 courses had their work on show at the Londonewcastle Project Space.

Images seemed to be on every surface, in an expansive range of formats; projections for Fashion Photography, digital display and a wall stand for Journalism, and open screening rooms for Public Relations and Broadcast.

Bonnie Chai was the only student from BA (Hons) Costume for Performance to have her work, a sweeping white gown hung from the ceiling, physically present.

“This is one of two costumes I did for my final year project, a contemporary dance video. The costumes are based on the dancer’s move from Jordan to London. I call the first piece the barrier stage because it’s about her confronting new cultural and language barriers.”

Confrontation of society played a part in Zuice’s (Ching Lau’s) photographs of the “second rich generation” or Fù èr dài, youth from affluent families growing up in Hong Kong.

“People label them as only knowing how to play and enjoy a posh life. I wanted to express that there’s more to them, they have their own pressures and are hungry for love. No matter what your social status, people want love.”

Claire Green from BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism (Print) celebrated print in a time where technology can take over.

“I created a literary journal called The Book of Hours which is essentially a celebration of print publication,” said Green. “The internet and technology are really changing the way we read and view paperback books. Even though I think we should embrace technology, we shouldn’t forget where literature came from.”

Both Sarah Lyon, BA (Hons) Make-up and Prosthetics For Performance, and Elise Pellican, BA (Hons) Fashion Illustration, relied more heavily on pure visual aesthetic to identify their work.

“My images are based on the darker side of Fables comics and Brothers Grimm fairy tales, the more you look into them the more you find a morbid edge to stories that are quite sweet,” Lyon said. “The first is Beauty and the Beast, with the Beast being a metaphor for violence rather than a physical thing.”

“I was looking at traditional Parisian set design of haute couture shows and their grandeur and lavishness,” said Pellican in reference to her three dimensional illustrations. “In my dissertation I considered whether couture is going to die out and the need for it in modern day, addressing the fact that couture isn’t just about the garment but also about showmanship and what it exudes. I think my work says that there’s still a place for haute couture in our society.”

The common denominator for all the graduates seemed to be an impressive talent for devoting oneself to a subject and creating a stimulating representation for others.

Everyone at LCF was very sad to learn today of the death of one of the world’s most iconic and acclaimed hairdressers, the wonderful Vidal Sassoon CBE at the age of 84.

Last year Vidal Sassoon was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by University of the Arts London at whose graduation ceremony he addressed LCF students via a filmed interview conducted by Head of College, Professor Frances Corner, OBE.

Mr Sassoon was a loyal supporter of LCF and worked tirelessly to support new talent both in hairdressing and fashion. LCF students and staff were lucky enough to be able to welcome Sassoon to the College in 2009 when he met with Foundation Degree Fashion Styling and Photography students and launched Cuts, Curls and Crimpers, a year-long celebration of hair.

It was a great privilege for all at the College to be in his company, a truly generous, warm and inspiring man and we know that his ground breaking work will be celebrated and studied at LCF for years to come.

Damart, well-known for its traditional thermals and outerwear, provided students from the Graduate Diploma in Fashion Media Styling course with items from its SS11 collections to style for magazine photoshoots and film as part of a course module called “Re-imaging the Brand”.

Damart is the leading home shopping retailer within the traditional ladies’ wear market category, but is currently working to refresh the brand to appeal to the younger woman who wants to look fashionable but doesn’t feel catered for by many fashion retailers.

Damart’s Marketing Director, John Bottomley said:

We’ve really enjoyed working with these inspirational students and have been amazed by the results which have really given us food for thought. We’re currently undertaking a lot of work at Damart looking at how we can appeal to the younger lady who is very different in attitude from women of this age just 20 or so years ago. They are much more active, vibrant and keen followers of fashion and I think the work the students have produced shows just how different ways of styling can make clothes more accessible to different ages.

As well as providing clothes, Damart also gave the students cash prizes and two students have been chosen to style the company’s AW11 Look Book for journalists.

Director of Programmes Media and Communication in the Graduate School at LCF, Nilgin Yusuf commented:

A successful stylist needs to be able to work across a range of markets and audiences and this project focussed the students on styling clothes designed for older women. We have enjoyed working with Damart and are grateful for the company’s support in sharing its research and providing clothing to ensure the students had a ‘live’ styling project to test their skills.

Student Gabriela Dubeux Ganem said:

Working to a client brief is something I’ve never done before, the sense of achievement and fulfillment at reaching our goal was extremely satisfying. I am normally petrified of public speaking but speaking to Damart was a pleasure as they are just as enthusiastic and passionate as we are. I have to say, I am proud of the standard of work that we achieved.

Justyna Mysior from the Graduate Diploma in Fashion Media Styling course has just completed a photo shoot titled ‘Unknown Soldier’ .

She said:

Unknown Soldier is a visual representation of a ballet dancer and a soldier personality. Contrasted army garment with the look and aesthetic of a ballet performer presents a fusion which reflects traits cohesion of people from these two occupations and sexes. Manipulation of the hybrid attires along with poses and gesture of a model has been used to identify unique qualities by finding similarities in nature of a ballerina and a soldier that initially seems to be completely opposite.

Ballet association to femininity identifies a classic dance with delicacy and subtlety when soldier profession is stereotypically known as a masculine activity. Gracefully choreographed ballet movement where figures are danced with elegance, beauty and fluidity contrasts with sharp, spontaneous and chaotic movement of fighter. Nevertheless, precision and technical perfection is required in both cases.
