Our final LCFMA18 MA Fashion Design Technology Menswear Graduate Spotlight interview is with Wenya Huang. Wenya’s collection is inspired by mythology and paper and will be shown as part of the catwalk on Friday 5 January (livestream here). We caught up with Wenya to hear more about the inspiration behind the collection.
Tell us about your final project…
The initial idea of my project revolved around the technique of handmade paper, which developed into focusing on a concept of mythology books, which has dominated the collection. The material of the collection looks like paper and the embroidery patterns represent story lines of books.
I named this project ‘xx said’ and it means that people who wear the collection are willing to share their own stories and experiences with others.
What would be your top tips to new students…
Do what you like, design is dominant and subjective, and it will never be able to please everyone. If you focus on the market, it will be change the nature of design.
What made you chose LCF and London…
No one ever talked to me where I should choose to study. I had seen London in many movies as a free and creative country, so I chose it.
What were the highlights and biggest challenges of your course…
The deviation between womenswear and menswear was probably my biggest difficulty.
What song or album are you currently listening to?
I have recently enjoyed listening the music of Ryuichi Sakamoto – Where is Armo.
My biggest inspirations and muses are…
Everything or everyone in life can be my inspiration.
What are your plans for life after your MA…
I’d like to continue as a designer.
