i-D Next Gen Photographers

i-D explores the ‘Next Generation of Photographers’ with BA (Hons) Fashion Photography alumna Olivia Rose. The series takes into account the level of intuition, empathy and dedication it takes to become a professional photographer that has the ability to build rapport with the subject. The three featured photographers work across fashion, documentary and portrait, dubbed a ‘new breed’ of photographers by the magazine.

Helmut Newton: Frames from The Edge

A classic from 1989 featuring German-Austrian photographer Helmut Newton, who notoriously escaped Nazi-occupied Berlin in 1936. This documentary captures the spirit of the fashion industry in the 1980s and Helmut’s journey from LA to Paris and returning back to Berlin. His working methods and style of imagery are perfectly translated into the documentary, plus there is an enlightening discussion of photography themes throughout.

Jeff Koons for MOCA Los Angeles

One of the most creative and famous artists still alive, Jeff Koons, is a household name and an Instagram favourite. His work transcends across multiple different genres and is a source of inspiration globally. MOCA Los Angeles commissioned a short documentary this year honouring the artist for their gala. The documentary tracks his childhood, inspirations, work and friends, with narration by actor Scarlett Johansson.

McQueen and I

Premiered in 2011, ‘McQueen and I’ was the first film about Alexander McQueen following his death. This film explores the relationship between the designer and his muse, Isabella Blow. The film is directed by Louise Osmond, who told his story with the help of relatives, friends, and ex-lovers. An emotional tribute to the British designer who revolutionised runaways and apparel in the UK, the film explores how daring he was and the legacy he left behind.

The Secret World of Haute Couture

Exploring designers and their clients, this documentary provides answers to why people choose to spend a little fortune on haute couture piece which they will only wear once. This documentary directed by Margy Kinmonth examines unwritten rules of haute couture and what it would be like to be part of the elite club.

The Future of Fashion with Alexa Chung

“The Future of Fashion is a mission to uncover the depth of the industry and the huge variety of roles that go towards sending clothes down the catwalk season after season,” explains fashion commentator and it-girl Alexa Chung, who set out to investigate the truth about the fashion industry with her Vogue Video series by asking the questions everybody wants answers to. From finding out, first-hand from Olivier Rousteing, how he rose through the ranks of fashion royalty at Balmain, to exploring how to secure a job at Vogue, Alexa brings her signature charm and wit to give an insider view of the ins and outs of the fashion world. Plus there’s a trip to LCF’s Dr Carolyn Mair, course leader for MA Psychology for Fashion Professionals and MSc Applied Psychology in Fashion. (Full article here
