Students from Media and Communication courses at LCF explored the current climate of print journalism at a symposium with speakers including Vogue’s Lucinda Chambers, Ben Freeman from Ditto Press and Anja Aronowsky Cronberg, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Vestoj.
While some predicted that digital culture would be the death of print, the students and speakers explored how the very opposite is now true. Printed matter is experiencing a renaissance with publishers and advertisers appreciating that print can make for a more meaningful experience for the reader.
The symposium had three panels discussing different aspects of print. It kicked off with a session called Printed Matter and the Archive. Senior Research Fellow and LCF Archivist Susanna Cordner led a discussion that examined how publications are embodied cultural containers that tell stories through their content and materiality. Panelists for this session included Anna Howard – bookseller and publisher at Hackney-based Donlon Books. Karen Di Franco, who works as an archivist and curator, was also on the panel discussing her research in forms, strategies and contexts within artists’ publishing.
In the second session, Why publish? Why print? Anja Aronowsky Cronberg, publisher of Vestoj, and Ben Freeman of Ditto Press, discussed their fundamental desire to explore the cultural phenomenon of fashion through the medium of print publishing. Both spoke about their individual practices and discussed the principles and practices of print publishing within fashion culture.
Finally LCF lecturer Charlotte Troy was in conversation with the legendary Fashion Director of British Vogue, Lucinda Chambers, who reflected on her experiences as a world leading stylist and image-maker for magazines.
Lucinda spoke to the audience about how lucky she feels to have experienced so many fashion shows. She said:
I’ve never stopped feeling lucky. Going to fashion collections is part of the job and I’ve never sat through a show and not taken something away from it – even if its just a toe nail colour. Everything can be a visual experience, even a Quality Street wrapper. Nothing is off limits. Because fashion shows are now accessible to everyone, its up to fashion editors to interpret them and make them a bit different – but not replicate them.
In discussing fashion magazines, she commented:
I’d like a magazine to be healthy and not all fashion magazines are; a magazine should leave the reader feeling empowered. Fashion magazines matter because they let people dream; they allow us to immerse ourselves in different worlds.
