In an article about the state of branding design Simon Manchipp talks about the radical and progressive solutions he has seen from CSM Graphic Design students to the quest for new brands to connect with customers.

Simon is co-founder of Someone, Executive Committee Member of D&AD and external assessor on the BA Graphic Design Degree Course. On the D&AD website he is quoted:

“As a visiting external assessor of the Advertising & Design sides of Central St Martins I’m seeing some amazing students creating radical and progressive solutions for brands. They are fearlessly developing new ways for old brands to re-connect and re-invent with customers. In a single presentation I saw copywriting, strategy, animation, graphic design, typography and sound design. The new breed are not designers. They are commercial artists.”

The full article, can be found on the D&AD website

Simon’s colleague at Someone, David Law recently took time to advise students about the transition from final year to getting hired. David appeared at a portfolio event, organisied by the students. CSM Graphics are proud to have external partners like Someone engaging wuth undergraduates and providing a real source of support and encouragement.

The Digital Present blog has just published a couple of fascinating new stories, written by CSM MA Innovation Management student Rita Fernandez.

The Digital Present blog follows CSM staff and students who are exploring digital technologies themselves and social media to enhance their learning and teaching in all sorts of new ways.

First up is an interview with BA Fashion student Olya Kuryshchuk, the founder of CSM student-run website, blog and magazine 1 Granary. Since it’s launch in 2011, 1 Granary has become a must-read for keeping up to date with the eclectic goings on at CSM. Olya talks about how 1 Granary become a valuable tool for her studies, practice and collaboration and finding out that there is no way around digital technology for today’s graduates. Read the rest of this article on the Digital Present blog.

Another recent story follows Rita Fernandez and her classmates from the MA Innovation Management as they participate in a research assignment as part of My Digital Life, a UAL initiative aimed at interrogating student engagement with digital technologies. Rita shares her experience and some of the research insights, which culminated in an event at Central Saint Martins, in which groups presented to an audience comprised of staff and students from across the University’s colleges. Read the rest of this article on the Digital Present blog.

Look out for Lucas’s film “Prince” on the Moving Image showreel at this years BA Graphic Design degree show, beginning 18 June 2013 at King’s Cross. There is a lot of talent in the Moving Image pathway, a rich area of design, which has been quietly gaining prescence since Esteban Gitton took over in 2011. Find film and video work alongside the other student work from the Design & Interaction, Illustration and Advertising pathways at this year’s degree show.

View stills from Lucas’s film, and read an in-depth interview with Lucas on CSM student-created website 1Granary.

Chelsea will work alongside Central Saint Martins and London College of Communication, exploring its unique ambisonic sound space, in three different ways. The colleges will begin their individual programmes with a lecture and master-class series, leading to a culminative symposium – Sounding Space, at the start of June.

Launching within the framework of BE OPEN: Inside the Academy, which is the educational platform set up by the think tank, the project is part of a broader aim to explore the five traditional senses with the goal of discovering how to trigger the elusive sixth sense, or intuition. The foundation is committed to developing this concept through innovative projects that create the ultimate synthesis of the sensory and technology.

The second sensingsite symposium event, organised by Susan Trangmar, Duncan White and Steven Ball for Fine Art Research at Central Saint Martins, was held at Parasol unit on 16-17 April 2013.

Following on from the success of sensingsite 1 in Spring 2012, the hosting of the event by Parasol unit allowed for performance presentations in the gallery alongside more conventional papers. This gave a dynamic atmosphere of genuine dialogue concerning research practice alongside conventional research paper based delivery.

‘The use of space, nomadic audience participation and intimacy of the whole thing [...] allowed some wonderful terrain to be covered during all Q+A’s. Personally it was very inspiring for me to be around such eclectic approaches to ‘site’ and [...] the three of you chaired and facilitated all discussions with such a fantastic breadth of understanding and critical thinking.’

Sensingsite is a research forum investigating materialities of landscape and place. Research presentations, events and performances explore the transformative potential of media such as moving image, photography, interactive technologies and sound. The events aim to provide an open and constructive environment within which participants and audience can interact to provide feedback and peer review.
