BA Graphic Design students create CD covers for Debut Discs

NMC’s Debut Discs project offers emerging British composers an international platform for their work. Released over four years from June 2012, each of the 12 discs will be devoted to a single composer’s work, as part of the Debut Discs series.

In December last year NMC briefed CSM BA Graphic Design students on the project and what they needed to consider when creating a CD cover. Composers Huw Watkins, Dai Fujikura, Sam Hayden and Helen Grime were invited to talk about their music and compositional process to help inspire their designs. The final designs for the 12 releases in this series were selected by a judging panel including composer Colin Matthews, designer Vaughan Oliver and Guardian/ BBC Radio 3 journalist Tom Service.

The cover designs were exhibited at the Debut Discs press launch event on 7 June, allowing the work of new designers to be showcased alongside the music of up-and-coming composers, highlighting the emerging talent in the worlds of music and art and illustrating the connections between the two contemporary arts forms.

The BA Graphic Design students whose artwork has been selected to appear on the disks Ross Aitken, Idil Ateşli, Natalie Braune, Nick Carter, Clelia Colantonio, Virgil Ferragut, Zheng Rui Hu,
Sabba Keynejad, DaEun Lee. May Yan Man, Hanna Piatrusha and Gilad Visotsky. Congratulations!
