Congratulations to BA Jewellery Design graduate Mayuko Yamamura!

The award ceremony was held to honour the four best jewellery designs according to this year’s brief which was to design a diamond necklace for parties. There were no restrictions in use of materials, colours or size – bold, artistic and fresh ideas were what the judges were looking for. The panel of judges consisted of:

  • Mr Theo Fennell, creative director of luxury jewellery company ‘Theo Fennell’. He counts as his clients the Beckhams, Naomi Campbell, Liz Hurley, and Elton John.
  • Ms Roberta Massy-Birch – Fashion Editor from InStyle Magazine.
  • Fashion designer Emilio de la Morena; his work is inspired by his Spanish heritage, often featuring complex use of obscure craft techniques.
  • Mr Michel Einhorn, managing director of Cool Diamonds, one of the leading diamond jewellery companies in the UK market.

Mayuko said of her design:

“The inspiration for the necklace was vintage design from the Victorian era. Collecting vintage objects and their design has always been a passion of mine. My love of the Victorian Period in particular was the key to my inspiration for this necklace design as I wanted to create a piece in keeping with the period and also to evoke an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia”.

The winner’s design will be exhibited along with those of the other three finalists on the Cool Diamonds’ website for at least two years.
