CSM Summer School 2018 ran for 12 weeks and as always it was full of amazing, inspiring and utterly fantastic students! Wanting to hear all about them and their summer at CSM we put out a competition call for student stories and the response was amazing. In fact it was so amazing that we ended up picking three winners. So, in no particular order, our first winner’s article comes from Elena Thornton who tried her hand at two of our jewellery courses.
What is your name?
What is your occupation?
I’m a Rehoming Assistant at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.
What courses did you study on and why did you choose them?
I first took Jewellery Making for Beginners and absolutely loved it!
I then picked Jewellery and Wax Carving because I was so inspired by the first course and wanted to try my hand at more jewellery. I saw that Jewellery and Wax Carving was available and that it was also being taught by Anastasia Young again; Anastasia is amazingly patient and has so much knowledge to share with her students.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
For Jewellery Making for Beginners, how well taught it was. The days were jam packed with useful and inspiring techniques, and we even finished early due to the fantastic teaching so on the last day we were able to experiment with our own ideas.
During Jewellery and Wax Carving I loved how easy the days were planned out. There was no rush or pressure to get things completed and there was always support on hand to help with any questions that needed answering.
How has this course benefited your career and personal development?
I now have a new knowledge and understanding about specialist jewellery techniques that can be put into practice. These techniques are extremely difficult to learn through books and online, you need one on one teaching to really understand the jewellery processes.
It has now also inspired me to look at a career within the creative industry.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a short course at Central Saint Martins?
Go for it! The courses are amazing, the campus is inspiring, you will have an amazing time and learn so much. You won’t want to leave!
What do you believe is integral to the work of an artist, in any discipline?
You must learn the basics as an artist in order to make the work that you love! If you don’t know the basics in your field then you will struggle to explore and create new pieces.
What 3 words best describe your short course experiences at CSM?
Creative, inspiring and refreshing.
