Reem Chariff is a Associate lecturer for BA Interior and Spatial Design and a founding member of Febrik, a collaborative platform for participatory art and design research. Febrik installed a wooden watch tower in November alongside a pop up shop at Mosaic Rooms Gallery in London, for their ‘The Watchtower of Happiness and Other Landscapes of Occupation’ exhibiton.

The exhibition turned visitors into unintentional activists during their interactions with the tower’s various vantage points, viewfinders and captured images. The installation suggests systems of surveillance like those seen at checkpoints, to illegal settlements or even at swimming pools. But Febrik stripped the tower of everything except its physical advantage, offering an unusual spatial and social experience. Visitors were encouraged to climb the structure and take photographs of themselves in front of a moveable backdrop.

The interactive Watchtower discussed the inventive, culturally specific and unique practices that demonstrators employed to occupy public spaces in three Arab cities during the recent uprisings. Analysing the role of the camera in narrating these three particular perspectives: defiance (the collective discovery in Tunisia), liberation (the comic drama as portrait in Egypt) and censorship (the unexpected photographer in Syria). The camera’s continued formal and informal use allowed for a multiplicity of representation, away from government and press control.

Mosaic Rooms gallery based in Kensington, West London is the UK arm of the A.M. Qattan Foundation and focuses on bringing creative voices in the Arab World to London, whilst revealing aspects of Arab society that are often not covered by the media.

Imagined as a new form of seaside entertainment, Flash Fog was inspired by the sea fret or ‘haar’ – a peculiar natural phenomenon found along the north-eastern coastline, where sea salt particles exaggerate condensation to create a density of moisture on the clearest of days. Designed by Colin Priest, Course Leader for Interior and Spatial Design at Chelsea, the interactive, site-specific installation commissioned for the Shimmer Digital Arts Festival held in Whitley Bay over 3/4th November 2012, he created a temporal landscape of participatory fog horn blowing, a shipwrecked coble fishing boat and illuminated fog as movement sensors trigger lights making shadows and phantoms – altogether inviting the public to summon the spirit of the sea.

Hollow – a photographic cinematic sequence – deals with the dichotomy between pureness and darkness in children’s night dreams as a symbol of the difficulty and loneliness of growing up in an increasingly careless society. In her piece the sky at night becomes a potential playground where children are allowed to free their imagination in a way that is forbidden to adults, constrained in their status quo.

South London Gallery

17 May – 22 July 2012

Febrik, a collaborative platform for participatory art and design research, present an exhibition which unravels the politics of the right to public space and explores relationships between invented, inherited and modified play practices. Their work considers the potential of curious and familiar narratives of daily social play, with a particular focus, for this project, on the spatial dynamics of community groups in two different contexts: Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut and Amman, and Sceaux Gardens in Camberwell. Through photographic documentation, texts and animations, the show also demonstrates the processes of research, design and development undertaken in the creation of The Shop of Possibilities, the SLG’s new social space for play for local residents in a retail outlet on the neighbouring Sceaux Gardens housing estate.

Ubyu is a completely new self-publishing book company, using bespoke software that has been developed as a result of thousands of conversations with professional photographers, artists and designers.

This newly launched service has been tailored specifically to meet the needs and demands of the creative industry. Created by a team with significant expertise and knowledge in paper and print, ubyu offers extensive design choices and book formats, and sets out to be the only truly bespoke print-on-demand company in the marketplace.

With a host of design choices, there is the ability to create something unique and of professional quality. ubyu offers many production techniques usually reserved for high-end books, such as endpapers, cloth covers, headbands and satin marker ribbons – all available in a choice of colours. Covers can be debossed or foiled – finishing touches that make a ubyu book one of a kind through the offering of an unrivaled level of customisation.

Quality extends through to the paper options. Starting at a weight of 160gsm, papers come in three different finishes; gloss, matt and uncoated, each bringing their own particular benefits to individual publications. While most competitors publish to a maximum of 160 pages, ubyu are able to create books of up to 460 pages, even on their highest weight stock. Printing is carried out using the latest HP Indigo digital technology, resulting in sharp images and vivid colour.

Book content can be imported via the custom-made ‘uDesign’ software, available to download free from the website. Alternatively, for those who want even more control over the self-publishing process, PDF files can be created from a variety of InDesign templates provided by ubyu and uploaded straight to the website via the preflight server. There is no restriction on order quantities – print runs of one to the thousands are welcome. Orders will be printed and bound within 15 working days and depending on the selected shipping details, can be delivered within the UK the next working day after production.

Self publishing prices vary depending on individual customisation choices but prices start at £11.90 plus p&p for a single book with the minimum of 28 pages. Discounts apply for multiple copy runs. See www.ubyubooks.com/specifics/pricing for the full pricing chart and discount structure.

Ubyu are currently offering a 10% discount for students at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, which can redeemed at the checkout using the following code ubyu-CCAD-10.
