We are pleased to announce that alumnus Nikolai Ishchuk has been selected to exhibit his work at The London Open 2012 at the Whitechapel Gallery, which will be on show Jul 4 – Sep 14, 2012. This exhibition, currently in triennial format, showcases some of the most dynamic work coming out of London and provides the chance to see some of today’s most innovative artists. It has previously helped launch the careers of artists such as Rachel Whiteread, Grayson Perry and Antony Gormley.
Ishchuk‘s work explores narratives of happiness and closeness through the manipulation of the couple/family and photo album format. By disrupting the language of family photographs, a previously invisible space opens itself for enquiry. Through extraction of form and juxtaposition, the images are further established as placeholders, not factual biographic evidence. The aim, according to the artist, is to provide an interpretative space characterized by oscillation.
On July 3, 2012 part of the series will be presented for the first time at The London Open and will continue July 4—September 14, 2012.
Look out for a feature on the artist in tomorrow’s (Tuesday 3rd July) Evening Standard!
