Camberwell Press will be launching a new book at the Kemistry Gallery in London next week. Entitled ‘Whatever Next: a discourse on typography’, the book and accompanying exhibition centre around a series of in-conversations that took place across London in June 2011.

“These discussions brought together a diverse range of designers, practitioners and artists for whom typography is in some way central to their practice. Starting with the speculative title Future Type Map, participants were asked to summarise the part typography has played in their work, the role it currently plays and propose what they feel the future holds.

Each participant was also invited to respond visually to the Future Type Map theme. The exhibition will showcase these responses and a series of stand out quotes from the book.

The book has been designed, compiled and edited by David Coventon, James Edgar and Frederick Williams and is published by Camberwell Press.

Camberwell Press is a forward-thinking, research-oriented publishing organisation based at Camberwell College of Arts.

Private View: Thursday 4 October 18:00 – 21:00.

Open: 4 – 20 October 2012 / Monday – Saturday 10.00- 18.00.

Charlie has been working with Eastpak for around 3-4 years now, so as he says it was “a natural progression to have his first solo show” with Eastpak at the Carnaby Street store.

The show entitled ’26′ is a site-specific installation of 3D letters. All are unique, one-off pieces.

The show is not about graffiti in the purest sense it is a response to graffiti and Charlie’s changing attitude towards it.

There is a nice little write up over on the Eye Magazine blog about the Design:Key Ideas – Word event that took place last week at Camberwell College of Arts. The event was organised in co-operation with Eye Magazine and guests included Anthony Burrill, Fraser Muggeridge, Marcus Leis Allion and John L Walters.

Sounds like the day was both thought provoking and productive from start to finish, what with Derek Yates (Course Director – FdA Design Practice + FdA Illustration for Sequence and Interaction) kicking the day off with the provocative statement that ‘art school thinking confuses freedom with creativity’, through to the workshop in the afternoon, of which the outcome will form the content of a book that will be published as a giveaway at the Camberwell degree show.

Key Ideas is a series of events organised by the Design Area specifically for Camberwell College of Arts design students. The three events – Object, Image and Word – examine issues and theories important to designers across the disciplines of graphic design, illustration and three-dimensional design. Cutting edge contemporary practitioners from a variety of backgrounds help illuminate the topics and students will have a chance to discuss the themes of the day in groups as well as to ask questions during panel discussions.

Key Ideas: Word – 12 May 2010

This Key Ideas discussion has been organised with the co-operation of Eye Magazine and takes as its starting point the contents of the spring issue (Eye 75), which features interviews with Anthony Burrill and Fraser Muggeridge.

This will take place firstly through a series of 30-minute provocations delivered by Anthony Burrill, Fraser Muggeridge, Marcus Leis Allion and Camberwell Course Directors David Coventon (BA Graphic Design) and Derek Yates (FdA Design Practice + FdA Illustration for Sequence and Interaction). The provocations will attempt to assess how and whether the starting points that seemed to be evident in ‘Typography Now’ have come to fruition.

Staff and students will then be given an opportunity to respond to these provocations through a discussion that will lead to the production of a series of large hand-drawn typographic sheets. These sheets will form the content of a book that will be designed and bound by a student team led by FdA student and a designer of the Key Ideas identity, Astrid Joublanc. The book will act as a record of the day and be published as a giveaway at the Camberwell degree show. Pages from the book could also be featured in the education section of Eye.

Provocation 1 – The Problem With Expressive Typography.

Provocation 2 – Typography With Words / Typography Without Words.

Provocation 3 – Keep It Simple.

Provocation 4 – The Discursive Practice That Produces Typography.

Guest speakers: Anthony Burrill, Fraser Muggeridge, Marcus Leis Allion, John L Walters.
