Collaborating Collections is a new programme of displays which aim to circulate collections from one UAL location, to another. The idea is to inhabit atypical display spaces within each host college, enabling students and staff to engage with previously unfamiliar material.
The inaugural display features material from The David Usborne Collection, open from 5th May – 2nd June in the Library at London College of Communication.
David Usborne has been a collector of tools – in the broadest sense of the word – for over 30 years. Multiple technologies, professions and making practices are represented in the collection. Objects were acquired for their arresting combinations of form and their puzzling functions. Ranging from the recognisable to the more obscure or obsolete, it is often difficult to ascertain what an object is and how it is (or was) used.
Visit the display to see if you can identify the objects and their function. We will be revealing the answers on our Instagram @UAL_Archives throughout the exhibition, and will be adding labels to the cases as the display continues.
The exhibition is accompanied by an Events Programme
Wed 10th May @ 1pm: Mini tour & discussion of the material with UAL Object Archivist. Drop-in event, held at the display cases in the library.
