On 22 January, the special collections team at LCC library ran a zines workshop as part of LCC’s Collaborate! week. Collaborate! week is a yearly week of workshops and events to celebrate collaboration, presented by LCC Academic Support. These events are aimed to help students embarking on their collaborative units.

The zine workshop’s aim was for students to discover the avenues of democratised collaboration with and within the LCC Zine Collection. Students had the chance to see and handle a large selection of zines created collaboratively, both by UAL students and other zine-makers, and to hear about the importance of collaboration to the development of fanzines and zines, zine culture and the zine community itself.

The second part of the workshop was activity-based, asking students to read aloud from zines from the collection to which they connected in some way, and then to produce a short piece of writing based on their readings. Some students chose to share what they had written with the group. The final part of the session was dedicated to zine-making, with students creating their own zine pages using the short pieces they had written. They could illustrate or add content in any way they chose. This content was then used to create a collaborative zine which is being catalogued and will be added to the LCC zine collection for future students to request and read.
