Students, Vikki Weston and Aoife Doherty, both BA (Hons) Fashion Management, have collaborated as consultants with innovative prosthetic creation company, The Alternative Limb Project.
Aoife and Vikki presented their work to Alternative Limb Project director and BA (Hons) Make Up and Prosthetics alumna, Sophie de Oliveira Barata, on July 13th in front of a panel of tutors.
Sophie founded The Alternative Limb Project to provide bespoke prosthetic limbs which either blend in perfectly with the body or stand out as unique pieces of art. Her creations range from the naturalistic to the surreal and the unreal, making a prosthetic limb an expression of the wearer’s personality and style.
The two students presented a marketing campaign to Sophie, which would reach out to potential clients by engaging with the charity Help for Heroes, and former servicemen to act as ambassadors for the brand.
They were drawn to working with The Alternative Limb Project out of a desire to undertake a unique and meaningful assignment. Vikki said:
“We became more passionate the more we did. Every time we came away from a meeting we were buzzing.”
The students met with Sophie a number of times before undertaking research and making contacts in order to devise their strategy. The lessons learnt have been motivating for the students in their career goals. Aoife summed it up:
“We’ve learnt so much in terms of academic and life lessons. Don’t be afraid to do something different and push your ideas further.”
Alternative Limb Project Director, Sophie, reflected on the students’ presentation:
“It went above and beyond my expectations and it really struck me that they kept the core values as central. I’m really keen to take up what they’ve offered – all the doors they’ve opened for me – I think it will lead to great things.”
The project comes as part of the BA (Hons) Fashion Management consultancy projects for which students have been presenting to industry representatives, from major brands to innovative boutiques and independents.
James Clark, Fashion Management Lecturer and International Co-ordinator, spoke of the talent that the students have shown over the past week:
“I’m very impressed with the level of engagement from both the students and industry – it’s really testament to the efforts the students have put in.”
He reflected on the 3 month-long projects:
“Having the opportunity to work as consultants with industry peers, rather than as employees, really relies on their sense of professionalism and self-confidence.”
In previous years the projects have gone on to gain BA (Hons) Fashion Management students’ roles as consultants for leading retailers, including Sweaty Betty and Marks & Spencer.
