The New Local

TNLSpillLogoLandscapeThe New Local is a series of events and publications devised by Study O Portable. It will collect, archive and study memories and perspectives of the current sites and architecture. Events will be held three times a year in the run up to the move to LCF’s new single campus in Stratford. The results will be edited into a series of publications that will inform the design of architectural amulets installed in the new site. These amulets will comprise small reminders, comforters and tokens that negotiate the past, the present and the future of LCF.

The New Local, Issue 5: Patterns

The 5th issue of The New Local expands on the many patterns and textures that dress the architecture of the London College of Fashion campuses. They are not just aesthetic treatments that give us sense of belonging, but uncover the border between the building and the space we occupy. This unbound issue contains 12 patterns taken from the LCF sites across London and made into scalable repeating patterns.

The New Local 4: The Botanical Issue

The New Local – Botanical Issue

For the 4th issue of The New Local in Autumn, Study O Portable are producing a botanical guide to plants found inside LCF buildings. It will be an illustrated booklet of different plants people have in their offices and workshops, with some information about each plant.

We would love to hear from LCF staff if you are interested in sharing your stories about plants in your workspaces.

The New Local, Issue 3 – Wish You Were Here!

The third issue of The New Local, Wish You Were Here!, explored different views from LCF buildings in the form of a postcard book. In each image, an outward view is framed by the architectural details of the building. Like the holiday postcards from the seaside, the postcards here are records of locations that are sometimes familiar and other times exotic to us, but all of them are equally significant in the way they present specific combination of the outside and the inside. See if you can guess the site locations from the images below (answers at the end of this post).

We were joined by staff at our Lime Grove campus canteen which boasts terrific views. They were encouraged to guess the views from postcards by looking through viewfinders. We also had prizes on offer along with coffee and home-made cakes. Staff that joined us found out more about this ongoing project, LCF buildings past and present and shared their own memories with their fellows.

The New Local, Issue 2 – Touches and Impressions

The second issue of The New Local, a series of events and publications to archive LCF memories in the lead up to the move to Stratford Waterfront, was inspired by a staff member who said that one of the things she loved about London College of Fashion was how elements of the buildings have changed over time with wear and use.

The New Local issue 2 considers the touches and impressions left on the LCF buildings. These details are the result of our daily interactions with the buildings that are both common and specific. Each image selected hints at our daily habits and some may act as individual reminders of their familiarity with the space.

There will be a launch event for staff at the Golden Lane site on 1 June, and there will be more details on this in events bulletins as well as the Need to Know email.

The New Local, Issue 1

Many staff joined us at John Princes Street in December for the first event of The New Local, a series of events and publications to archive LCF memories in the lead up to the move to Stratford Waterfront.

Issue 1 was a photo project documenting every single room across all six sites, and its launch was celebrated with a Pub Quiz. It was amazing to see the sixth floor transformed into a local boozer, complete with horse brasses on the walls, dark wood, wallpaper and tablecloths.

We drank beer and wine, and ate pork scratchings, crisps and nuts, then pitted ourselves against each other on general, fashion, and LCF knowledge for the ultimate pub quiz. Complete with drawing round and ‘Hairdo Zoo,’ the quiz rewarded the winners with a gold staff-pass holders, and the losers with jars of cockles.

Have a look at the quiz below. How many of the answers would you have got?

The New Local

Current and former staff are invited to take part and talk about what they know and what they like about the spaces, and if they have anything special to share with the community. There might be a ghost in one building, a lucky charm you touch or a hidden space not everyone knows about in another. We would like to open up conversation and discussion about the legacy and future of LCF in the new site through the events which range from a pub quiz, a hair salon to a bingo night or a ping pong tournament, each taking place in a different location. Alongside the events, staff members are encouraged to contribute to the project with their stories and perspectives via email and social media throughout the course of the project.

The information gathered through events  and social media will be collated, edited and published in the form of a series of publications. Each one cataloguing certain spatial aspects of the current campuses and launching at the next event. These catalogues will serve as the basis for the final output, a series of architectural amulets that will be permanently installed in the new building. These amulets will comprise small reminders, comforters and tokens that negotiate the past, the present and the future of LCF. Subtle and intimate anti-monuments in the new built environment that will be LCF’s new collective home.
